Update: January 28, 2014
For the past two years, the Goddard Employees Welfare Association
Council and the GEWA Business Office have been discussing the need to
change the current business model of the Barney and Bea Recreation
Center. Currently, costs to run the Rec Center exceed rental income by
$50,000 every year, requiring GEWA revenue from other sources to
support operations. After careful consideration, GEWA has decided to
close the Rec Center as of January 31 to allow a team to develop a new
model for operations to include a recommendation for some level of
renovation of the facility.
GEWA recognizes that groups who had planned to hold events at the Rec
Center will be inconvenienced by the temporary closure. Regrettably,
this is unavoidable, as was the temporary closure of the Building 21
cafeteria, the Building 1 food court and the Exchange store while
those facilities underwent a renovation. We are all now enjoying the
results of those renovations, and I have no doubt that in the future
we will again be enjoying the use of a revamped Rec Center. The
Building 8 auditorium is available to hold events and can be scheduled
using the following Web Site
You will soon receive a request to provide feedback on your
requirements for the Rec Center. The team will use the feedback you
provide to develop a new business model and plan for renovation.
Thank you for your patience while GEWA continues to transform their
facilities to better serve Goddard employees.
